Why do people procrastinate?
My Interest and Experiences
I am guilty of being a huge procrastinator. I know I have a lot of time to do particular assignments so... I wait… and I wait… until the last possible moment I have to do it. This is not a trait I possess in which I am proud of. I wish I had the ability to do work when I plan to. I have been rather lucky with my procrastinating because I seem to always be able to get my assignments done on time, given that it loads on unnecessary stress. However, I believe this does impact the quality of my work. When I am doing an assignment in a rush, I just go through the motions as opposed to putting in my best work.
So what’s the problem? Why do I do this? I am very organized student and I plan out when I should be doing my work, however I get distracted by things like how comfy my bed is and that cell phone that keeps lighting up, so I decide “I have time anyway.” I decide to spend time relaxing before I get my work done, which is a backwards order.
Working Knowledge
I have already come across many useful sources I will be able to incorporate in my research paper. There are many different studies such as the amount of people who procrastinate, the psychology behind the act of procrastinating, multiple studies on reasons for procrastinating, and the personality type that fits procrastinators.
I am particularly interested in a study I found on the psychology of procrastinating. A statement that really caught my attention was, “Believe it or not, the internet did not give rise to procrastination” (Jaffe). I was drawn by this because I think when most people are procrastinating they result to technology. I know when I’m usually putting something off, I am playing on my phone and scrolling through social media. I am now interested in focusing a part of my research paper on the effects of technology and procrastination.
More sources that interest me are ways to improve procrastination. I will focus a part of my paper on studies and facts proving if a procrastinator can change their ways. I am also interested in learning about these techniques for myself, because once I take control of this awful habit, I will be a more confident student.
